![]() ![]() Shahkot is not the kind of place to let one of their inhabitants disappear without a fuss: the “town made most of the drama”. On discovery that Sampath has moved into a tree, the “neighbours came by regularly for news and everyone shouted out their support”, eager to join in on their way to the market. The eccentric Shahkot community all share one thing: an insatiable thirst for gossip. In other contexts, these needs may be tragic – the Shahkot community a Greek chorus perhaps or the eternal yearning for something a character’s fatal flaw – however Desai manipulates the reader with her wit to find the characters’ wants hilarious all the whilst presenting Shahkot as vibrant and energetic, despite its economic challenges. In Kiran Desai’s novel “Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard” every character wishes to attain something: dignity, food, happiness and some simply a topic to discuss. ![]() ![]() Explore the ways in which Desai’s characters are humorously hungry in ‘Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard’. ![]()

Stone’s inspiration for Clean Getaway had an unconventional source: a Twitter headline about a grandmother who was arrested for shoplifting a diamond bracelet from a Jared store in the Atlanta area. ![]() ![]() ![]() The list of bands with Jewish members reads as a veritable who’s who of Punk 101: Bad Religion, The Circle Jerks, The Clash, and the Ramones to name just a few. ![]() Punk rockers created a separate identity for themselves, as well as an in-culture, an easy parallel to their immigrant parents. The book The Heebie-Jeebies at the CBGB by Steven Lee Beeber notes that punk grew directly out of a post-Holocaust awareness and shame, “embracing fascist aesthetics and abandoning self-pity and victimhood.” In most cases, you really have to dig for the Jewish identity: it’s not really a particularly organized effort and along the way is fairly offensive and incomprehensible.
